Mela-What? was created by me Maura Luxford (Hannah’s Mum) to be a youth friendly resource that could unpack the simple science behind melanoma and young people in Australia.
In 2008 my eldest daughter Hannah aged 20 died from melanoma and at the time I had no idea that it could affect young people, let alone kill them.
I made it my business to understand as much as I could about melanoma and from that created ride4acure (and set up the Hannah Rose Melanoma Research Fund) which has seen me undertake 3 long distance treks taking Mela-What? on the road across five states to over 150 schools and communities presenting to over 22 000 young Australians. And in the process of delivering Mela-What? on the three treks have raised over $110 000 for adolescent and young adult melanoma research in the pursuit of improving treatments and finding a cure.
Mela-What? eLearning resource came about in partnership with the EduOne HUB at University of New England (UNE) at Armidale NSW, the EduOne project team with funding from the National Broadband Network, created the Mela-What eLearning resource which you can now access from this site. From 2010 onwards I’ve had many schools and remote communities asking me if I had an eLearning resource that students could access.
I’m so grateful for the resources and support I’ve received to bring this to reality.
